Darren and I had the chance to escape everyday life for a week and vacation in California. We even found loved ones and friends willing to watch Caleb for the 6 days we were gone - THANK YOU to those awesome people. We decided to go low key in Monterey for a few days then hit San Francisco for the second half of the vacation.
When we flew into San Francisco, we headed off to the rental car place. There we learned that we had been assigned a Crown Victoria to cruise around in for the week. Not that Crown Vics aren't nice cars - we just couldn't picture ourselves in one. Even the guy helping was like, "You can't drive in Monterey in a grandma car . . .".

So, the guy offered us a pretty cheap upgrade . . . actually, I wouldn't call it an upgrade since the car was just as huge . . . but maybe more of a "style upgrade" to this beauty!

While in Monterey, we drove the "17 Mile" drive. Basically, you're driving along the coast and through fancy schmancy golf courses.

Per Darren's request, we actually stopped and walked around Pebble Beach. I'll admit that it was very beautiful and if I played golf, I could appreciate the spectacular views along the course. Here's Darren on the last hole . . . maybe someday he'll play there . . . he better start saving now!

After a few days in Monterey walking around Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row and seeing 2 movies, we made the drive to San Francisco taking the 1 all the way there along the coast. We even drove over the Golden Gate bridge. Unfortunately, it was a foggy day and the bridge was almost completely covered from the side we ended up on.

Our first night there we went to a Giants game. We had a great time - even though it was soooo cold.

Darren was brave and tried the garlic fries which I guess San Fran is famous for. I'll admit they were pretty tasty - we smelled like garlic for a couple of days.

Our next night there we went to this crazy little theater - if you can even call it that - for a magic show. I found it on TripAdvisor and thought why not. It was this small little room with about 35-40 seats - I emphasize the word small! We were a little unsure walking in, but the show was awesome. We were sitting like 10 feet away from the magician and he put on great show. We even got our picture with him (just ignore the crazy eyes - the flash must have reflected or something)

Our last full day there we ventured off to Alcatraz. It's definitely worth the trip to get there. It was very interesting to see "The Rock" in person and walk around. One of the amazing things to me was how quiet it was even though there were hundreds of people milling about. Most of us were listening to the audio tour, but it was still just quiet.

After waiting over an hour, we finally got on to a trolley!!!! It was ridiculous, but you can't not ride a trolley while there. Once on, it was actually a great way to see some sites.

Overall we had a great time but were ready to come home to our little man.
